Another mindblowing article: English vs Mandarin

While most Singaporeans couldn't wait to ditch their Chinese textbooks upon entering JC/Poly (equivalent of high school), I went on to complete Chinese at 'A' levels.
The main reason was because I was the last batch of the high school system of "first three months" and having attained astonishing results and entering possibly the best JC (that would be Junior College) in Singapore, the school that supports great education did not support my wish to take on Double Mathematics (combination 2 Maths courses, Physics & Chemistry).
Reason being,"you did not take this combination in your previous school (still Top 5 JC locally) so I am afraid you might not be able to catch up with our syllabus. Moreover, it is not just a 3 months' worth compared to the classes in other JCs because we have lower turnover rates than most places so we have covered quite a lot of material." (not exact words but the gist is there).

So, who cares if my results were really astonishing because it didn't even affect an educator's mindset that a student might have the potential to do well.
Anyway, I was a wimp.
I didn't push for it like I did when I so wanted to go back to my previous school and made an appeal with the principal. Some drama there, I ran after her.
#bitches #bothyouandme

Anyway, stayed in the Top JC for namesake and I went on to do Chinese because well, of the choices available for my capability and study interests, Mandarin is a beautiful language.

It was a level up but oh dear, Mandarin is (was?) really a beautiful language!
If you want to challenge yourself, see Mandarin in many forms.

Originally in English,
You say that you love rain,
but you open your umbrella when it rains...
You say that you love the sun,
but you find a shadow spot when the sun shines...
You say that you love the wind,
But you close your windows when wind blows...
This is why I am afraid;
You say that you love me too...

你说你喜欢雨,但是下雨的时候你却撑开了伞;
你说你喜欢阳光,但当阳光播撒的时候,你却躲在阴凉之地;

你说烟雨微芒,兰亭远望;
你说春光烂漫,绿袖红香;
你说软风轻拂,醉卧思量;
你说情丝柔肠,如何相忘;

<and from here onwards, I'm about to shoot my brains out>

A Filipino friend of mine learnt Chinese at school. She's interested in the language but I guess she doesn't have much opportunities to become fluent in it. Anyway, I thought this was fun for her to read and I'm going to translate this article for her (click on the title in Chinese characters!) My explanation, if in Chinese, will be in traditional characters because that's what she learnt.

Mandarin Examination Level 10 (2014)
Please state the difference between the corresponding phrases below.

1. In winter: wear as much as you can; In summer: wear as little as you can.
*1st pattern: =able to, 穿=wear, 多少=how much, 穿多少=wear how much (this is real Singlish but you'll get it; 多少 is a pair here, literally means "how much?" 多少錢=how much money?,多少飯=how much rice (do you want?) )
2nd pattern: =able to, 穿=wear, 多少=how little, 穿多少=wear that little
(in the 2nd pattern, +adjective = emphasis of that adjective. 多大=extent of the biggness in size etc.)

2. Women are left on the shelves(=剩女) due to 2 reasons.
One being that she can't like anybody, another being nobody likes her.
看不上=to be interested/think the other party matches you
One being she is unable to see the people around her as her match, second being her personal qualities are not that attractive for the people around her. --> This one is difficult.

3. (I) overheard a girl in the train, probably she was talking to her boyfriend on the phone,"I am already at Ximenzhi (station name), you better be out and walking towards the train station. If you're there and I'm not, you'll just have to wait. If I'm there and you're not, just you wait! (meaning she's going to get back at him)"
First 你就等着吧=you+shall/have to+wait
Second 你就等着吧=JUST YOU WAIT! here, 就等着吧 is a phrase often used when the speaker is angry and threatening the listener.

4. The reasons for being single: Originally you liked someone, now you enjoy being by yourself.
一个人 can mean a person (counting # of people) or being alone.

5. Two types of people who get dumped easily: One type doesn't know what is love, the other doesn't know what is "make love" (sex).
First part, 什么叫做+ where love is the concept.
Second part, 什么叫+做爱 where 做爱=sex is the concept.

6. Two reasons where you want to be with another person:
One reason being that you have fallen for the person, the other being enjoying grinding/riding etc. (you name the verb) that person.
First part 喜欢上(fallen for)+人家(the other person).
Second part 喜欢+(the verb)+人家(the other person).

7. There are 2 reasons if a guy is late for a date:
1, Overslept. 2, Have already gotten you into bed.
means sleep or having sex.
means passed or over or having done something before.

The foreigner finally burst into tears, handed a blank sheet and went back to his own country.

Monbukagakushou Scholarship for Research Student (Singapore version)

Have you dreamt of living in Japan?
Do you also enjoy studying/research work?
It's the time of the year again to apply for the Monbushou scholarship!

Trivia:
Before, the ministry was known as Monbushou but they have been renamed Monbukagakushou They offer the following scholarships for:
undergraduates (full scholarship),
specialized training college students,
research students (full scholarship),
teacher training students, and
exchange students (for Japanese studies majors).

I have applied twice.
The first time, I received notice to take the exams while I was overseas = I booked a holiday when I should have been all-ready in Singapore? SHOOT ME IN THE HEAD PLS. Anyway, I had to withdraw. *NOTE: Check the schedule that will be posted on the Japan embassy's website!!!

The second time I got through all the way to the interview round but I didn't perform well during my interview due to some personal reasons. Then again, if I had REALLY REALLY wanted it, that wouldn't have happened. Point being, make sure you know this is what you want. FOCUS, PEOPLE!

The myth goes that if you can get a recommendation from a professor, you're going to pass.
But no, since a few years ago, many universities have blocked off such contacts from potential students and only allow direct communication with the prof AFTER you have passed the primary screening and received a recommendation from the ministry.

Still, I would recommend you know what it is that you want to do and start preparing for research ideas in the area of your choice. Also, they would totally recommend you apply for what you have done for your undergraduate paper or something related to your work (if you come with work experience).

Things you’ll need to prepare:
1. Main application form
2. One application attachment form
3. Your study plan
4. Recommendation from a previous professor & employer (if currently employed)
5. Graduation cert + transcript
6. 4 photographs (4.5cm x 3.5cm)
7. Abstract of your thesis
Health certification is only required upon their notification so just leave that out. Anyway, I’m only speaking for the application in Singapore.
Pick 3 professors whom you most likely will want to work with, according to similar research interest. As for the most difficult part, THE STUDY PLAN.
a) What you last studied
b) The research you want to do in Japan
c) Details of your research plan

So if you get it, as a research student you get 143k JPY. when you move on to masters, its 144k JPY (as of 2013 update). Registration usually starts in April/May~July. Seriously, double check the schedule for upcoming tests and interviews. Good luck!

P.S. You may arrange a session to meet up with the consultant in the Japan embassy if you are still unsure or have other questions.

For forms & more info, visit the Japan embassy website.
